Note to the Student M ost of the vocabulary words in Level Blue will be new to you. Some words you may recognize. Others you may not know at all. The words have been chosen because they are words you will come across often.
You will see them in schoolbooks and on tests. You will see them in books and magazines, as well as on the Internet. You will also hear them spoken by teachers and others in a variety of professions. In each of the 18 units, you will read a passage that contains the 12 unit words. You will see and hear how the words are used in the passage. Then you will learn more about them, including their definitions, pronunciations, parts of speech, and how they are used in sentences.
You will also find synonyms and antonyms for the words. As you complete the pages in the unit, not only will you practice using the words, but you will also show what you know about them. Each unit also helps you build vocabulary beyond the unit words. For example, in Word Study, you will learn how to use word parts prefixes, suffixes, roots to figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words. In Shades of Meaning, you will learn the meanings of some idioms, proverbs, similes, and metaphors.
