If its not directly offering the compatible version then yes, you may need to download it to iTunes on a computer or on a newer device that can run iOS 10 or later, and is using the same Apple ID as your iPad for the iTunes store, and then as Michel mentions download it from your purchased apps on the iPad and it should then offer the compatible version to you.
I just downloaded a compatible version of Kindle to a first gen iPad running iOS 5. Apr 16, PM. If you have a newer iDevice with newer iOS that is attached to your Apple ID and password, you could install recent app to that device, then go back to your iPad 3 and attempt to download the recent app and see if iOS throws up a pop-up message telling you and older, compatible version of the app is available for your device and would you like to download and install this now?
